Rectocoele

What is rectocoele?

A rectocoele is a protrusion of a woman's rectum into her vagina.

What causes rectocoele?

This sometimes occurs when the supports become stretched or damaged.

What are common symptoms of rectocele?

Symptoms may include:

  • pelvic discomfort
  • slight bulges through the floor of the vagina
  • back ache
  • urinary and bowel problems

What sort of treatment is recommended for rectocoele?

Treatment for rectocoele should be undertaken by a gynaecologist or colorectal surgeon. It may either be surgical or conservative (non surgical).
Before any surgery is done, you should have a thorough investigation - including a Urodynamic Study - to ensure there are no other underlying conditions. Often anorectal physiology studies are also required.
